When DW retires I am trying to talk her into moving to Mexico, around Guadalajara. The last I heard your money goes 8X further. If we were able to become citizens we would not be required to leave the country every 6 months. Anyone know how difficult it is to obtain citizenship in Mexico?

Maybe somebody who lives their can post but I dont think your money will go much further in Mexico. One of the problems with Mexico is that there are at least 20 million Mexicans and Americans who were born in Mexico who are sending money to Mexico and artificially inflating prices on everything. Then of course there is the problem of medical care. If you are on Medicare or VA or an HMO you probably have to come back to the states or pay out of your pocket. I think you can live there cheaper but it wont be as cheap as you think. If you wanted to find something cheaper than Boise look at some of the areas around Las Vegas or Phoenix that have a lot of foreclosures.

Go to a small town in the midwest for the spring and summer and fall, go south for the winter in your RV.
You can buy a little old house back there from 20 to 100 thousand dollars. Cheap living.

I say DO IT! and get all your friends to do it also. Now if only we could get 12 mil more to feel the same way, maybe we could neutralize the influx, LOL.

I'm sorry to do this, but, I love my country...she may not be perfect, but she's leaps and bound above the rest and why anyone would want to give up there citizenship I don't understand. Traveling south in the winters...that I might do. If you give up your citizenship you run the risk of being denied re-entry. I don't know, maybe you could have a dual citizenship. For me though, I'm perfectly happy with right where I'm at.

You can never be a citizen of Mexico. However you can get a sort of landed immigrant status. Living in Mexico is not cheap as it was say back in the 60's. But it is probably less than in the USA. I would suggest you join mexconnect for more information. This forum is for RV'rs and there are only a few who actually live in Mexico. You can get an FM3 Visa that does not require you to leave the country.

We spend part of the winter near Guadalajara and NO WAY is it that cheap! Your money will go further, but more of a lifestyle choice IMHO. Anyplace most Canadians or Yankees would want to retire is not cheap. Remote villages maybe, but you will still be surprised at the cost. As Moisheh posted, only requires a FM3 to remain in Mexico. Good Luck?!

* You CAN have dual citizenship
* You CAN become a Mexican citizen if you follow the rules
* You can also live here indefinitely by getting one of several different types of visas, immigrant and non-immigrant. There are rules and requirements for these also.
* It is not really much cheaper to live in urban or tourist locations, some things are cheaper and others not. It is a lot cheaper to live in the boondocks but you will not be living with the same amenities and few will speak English. Kind of like living in the boondocks of the US except for the English part.
* There are a lot of really good reasons to live in Mexico but, unless you are coming from California or New York, they will not include cheaper housing.
* One good reason might be to learn something about the rest of the world and escape that troll mentality. If not, please stay where you are.

I'm with you DrGriz.
I don't want to be a citizen of another country even if I retain my citizenship here. This is the only place I want to be a citizen.
Spend the winter in Mexico in the RV, now that might be a possibility.
