With gas prices approaching $5.00 per gallon, we have modified our camping lifestyle and travel plans to economize. Some things are still FREE -- like nature and the upcoming Olympics (all broadcast in HD for FREE using your crank-up antenna!
Some Hints to Save Money --
- Find closer campground (like State and County campgrounds)
- Stay longer for each trip
- Barbeque instead of eating out
- Watch HDTV instead of going shopping or movies
We’re more frugal these days… that’s why rather then wasting money on gas... we invested in upgrading our old tube-TV with a widescreen Hi-Def TV.
Happy Camper

We go camping to DO just that, CAMP. Not sit around and watch HDTV. We can do that at home.
As far as camping closer to home, I can't understand this logic.
Why would we pack everything up to drive 50 miles to a campground?
We like adventure. We like to travel a minumum of 3-400 miles.
We will not let the gas slow us down.
And we ALWAYS cook home. Eating out is on occasion.
Now as far as gas prices, We burn wood all winter, so I figure since my neighbors burn oil and get a 200 gallon delivery once a month at what... $4-5 per gallon for 6 months of heating. Lets see, that's about $6000 saved since I cut and split all my own wood.
With that said, we can afford gas very easily.
Happy Camping!

Some folks (like myself) work from home so just to "get away" even if it's to watch tv, breaks up the monotony on the home front...

Because again, sometimes it's just about getting out of the house, even if it's only "down the street"...

Some familys have both parents working so eating out during the week is convenient & time saving. Yes it cost $$$ and maybe that's why they "camp" closer to home, to save gas.

so, how many cords of wood do you cut to last 6 months?
over the hill and enjoying the view
diesel pickup and 5th wheel trailer.
being a full timer, we watch our driving, stay in places longer, and eat a little cheaper. otherwise we just pay the price. not much else to do. still cheaper then having a house payment and paying house bills and for gas to and from a job. and we still see more

Gas is what it is just pretend that you moved into a bigger house with a bigger mortgage. Or you have a bad gambling habit. Can't put a price on RV'ing suck it up. Enjoy it while you can for one day we might not be able to. And not just from gas prices a good idea invest in petroleum.
If you already own and RV, vacation/travel by RV is STILL less costly then about any other form of travel. It is also less aggravating.
I'm over the whole $5.00/gallon thing. It is time to face facts and realize the days of cheap gas are gone and move on. In the grand scheme of things it is NOT leisure time that sucks up money. It is the willingness of people to live far from work and drive big vehicles too fast to and from. If everyone stops doing that prices will regulate (although not considerably cheaper) and we'll all have a better deal.
Personally, between carpooling and buying a smaller day-to-day vehicle my fuel costs are now 1/3 of what they were 3 years ago.
