What we do for our children and pets...

We were spending the weekend in Canon City, doing the usual touristy stuff, when I get a chilling call from my mom and dad. My mom and dad usually help us out when we camp by watching and feeding our menagerie of pets (1 Parrot, 2 cats, 1 hamster). My mom says that she cannot find one of our (indoor only) cats and that the hamster cage was open and the hamster was missing.

Uh, oh.

She continues to say that they looked all over our house for over an hour with no results. And that there appeared to be a bit of blood on the kitchen floor.

Uh, oh x2.

A brief discussion with the family, and we decide to cut the trip short and return home, about 2 1/2 hours away. My teenage son is very attached to his Hamster, and cries most of the way home anticipating the worst.
We arrive home safe, and immediately start tearing the house apart. The "missing" cat was just sitting there on the floor looking at us like we were crazy. (Cats are want to think that of human behavior!) But the hamster was nowhere to be found. We suspend the search at 2:30am. My DW decides to sleep in the basement "just in case". My poor son is a wreck and finally falls asleep on the couch.
4:30am. My DW wakes me with "I found him!" She had heard some faint scratching behing the entertainment center in the basement and when she shined her light behind it, a little hamster head peeked out! We were able to capture the little guy in short order and presented him to my son!

The look on my son's face made it all worth while!

The blood that was found was apparently from one of the cats, who had gotten nipped my the hamster during some altercation!

Hamster = 100%
Cats = 100%
Son = 100%+++
My Nerves = 0% (And falling like a brick!)

What we do for our children and pets...

What a cute story!

I'm happy for your son, and for the hamster.

I think the hamster needs a more secure cage... to protect the cats...

Glad it all turned out okay!

My son (in his 20's) sent me this photo the other day. This is what he found when he got home from work:

I can imagine your scene was very much the same. By the way - Scratchy the hamster was not injured.

Been there and done that. We had one of our kid's hamsters escape and I was worried sick for 3 days (we also have cats). One night he just popped up out of the heating grate in our family room!! We still laugh about that hamster, it was a few years ago and he outlived the other 3.....hhmmmm maybe I should write a children's book abou that hamster's adventures, lol.

Unfortunately, my cat-hamster tale had a different ending.
