We have seen 40+ DPs and large 5ers over a mile off the main road, boondocking and we have had our 4X4 on hundreds of miles of off road trails in the area.

There are lots of forest roads -- the Kaibab National Forest would be able to tell you if you can ride an ATV on them legally. I have seen folks riding, but don't know if it is really legal.

And you can take a big rig out there to boondock, but take it easy -- the roads are pretty rough. Not so rough as to be impossible, but rough enough to shake up your groceries pretty good. I towed my travel trailer at 20 mph max, and a few screws came loose here and there because of the washboards and potholes.

Bring lots of water -- there is none out there.

Having said all of that, our North Rim boondocking trip was the biggest (and best) adventure we have ever had.

Hi WO,

AZ just passed another OHV law for $20 fee, for additional law enforcement. I would go look on the NF website for "open" trails as the fine is $5000 and/or 6mths jail riding in closed areas, and there SERIOUS about the fines.

Have you seen this picture and wondered where it was?

61 miles down a washboarded and often muddy dirt road, off Arizona State Road 389, is one of the most remote yet majestic camping areas you can find. This and many more can be seen at this link
Toweep/Taroweap Area and YES it is on The North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Hard to get to, yes be worth it, Oh My Yes. Once when we were there I wrote in the guest book.
Beam me up Scotty ... It doesn't get any better than this.

Gorgeous, but can you ride ATVs there?

my favorite atv area is on lake powell. lone rock on the utah border. sand dunes and slick rock, and you can camp right on the beach. just a hop skip and a mid size jump to the grand canyon.
