Personally I am beginning to think of our three nations as a North American Community. I don't know much about economics but it seems that trade imbalances between the three nations will have to be improved in order for the long term survival of the US.
Canada and Mexico are exporting nations while the US is an importing nation. This doesn't seem sustainabale to me although there are probably other forces at work that a minion like me doesn't see.
I'd be willing to bet that the Mexico Economy will move into the top 10 list in the next 20 years. That can't be anything but good for the North American community.
Makes sense. European Union, Middle East Union, Asian Union, and the North and South American Union. Why not? Spreads out the wealth among the masses. Spaniards use to work all over Europe as "guest workers" because conditions were not good in Spain; low wages and high unemployment. Now with the EU, a large percentage of Spaniards have returned home to better job opportunities and salaries.
The U.S. and Canada could send technology and business culture south, and Mexico skilled and talented workers north balancing out the wage and employment deficits. Why does one have to be bigger and richer in extreme terms. Lower one and raise the other.
You are beggining to sound like a socialist?? Although your post makes sense there are a lot of forces working against any kind of "union" of the 3 countries. Mexicans are very patriotic and they would fear losing their sovereignty. Canadian would be worried about losing even more jobs in the auto industry. Americans would worry about an open invasion of Mexican workers. I dont think it will ever happen. There are many in all 3 countries who would like to scrap NAFTA.
