Hi everyone. Great forum and this is my first post.

I am looking for a 3-season tent that has excellent ventilation/screening and is at least 72" tall in the center. It would only be for 2 people but I would like some room in this tent.

Desireable Features:

a) Plenty of screening to view nature when inside the tent
b) Walk-in vestibule would be nice to store things
c) Adequate raincover (although I do have a huge wing that I use)
d) Aluminum vs. fiberglass poles (not a deal breaker though)

Here's what I have been looking at but I can't always tell from the pictures whether there is adequate screening to provide airflow. Any suggestions?

1) The Kelty Green River 6 - looks awesome except it appears to have very little screening and all of it is high on the tent..that true?

2) Big Agnes Big House 6 - awesome amount of screening but it seems to have an inadequate rainfly (I live in the Adirondacks where it always rains)

3) REI Hobitat 6 - incredible ventilation, pitiful rainfly and no vestibule

4)TNF Trailhead 6 - nice vestibule and rainfly, ventilation adequate

5) Sierra Design Bedouin 4 + Annex - everything I want but only 65" tall

6) Kelty Mantra 5 or 7 - seems to have all of it

Thanks folks.

Welcome! Lots of informed members here. Enjoy the plethera of information, but don't become, so, addicted to the site that you forget to go camping.

Fiberglass poles and no mesh down low.

2) Big Agnes Big House 6 - awesome amount of screening but it seems to have an inadequate rainfly (I live in the Adirondacks where it always rains)

Big Agnes offers a huge vestibule.
This is a similar layout to our tent, the LL Bean Vortex 6 (no longer available). Ours has a full coverage fly. DW likes her cot. The cot fits on the wide side of the tent, plus the cot is the same height as the mesh for good ventilation. Having the doors on the narrow ends of the tent leaves them unobstructed. We like having two doors. We can store gear in one vestibule leaving the other clear for ingress/egress.

3) REI Hobitat 6 - incredible ventilation, pitiful rainfly and no vestibule

We know people with this tent. When it rains there is no support over the center mesh panel causing the fly to gather water and sag. There is an optional vestibule.

4)TNF Trailhead 6 - nice vestibule and rainfly, ventilation adequate

The footprint won't fit on some tent pads.

5) Sierra Design Bedouin 4 + Annex - everything I want but only 65" tall

The Bedouin 6 may be an alternative.

6) Kelty Mantra 5 or 7 - seems to have all of it

The 7 is to big to fit some tent pads, and the peak height of the 5 is 60".

Thanks folks.

If the size of the footprint is not a concern, either TNF Trailhead 6 or the Kelty Mantra 7 should fit your needs. Check with the rangers where you are planning to camp.

If we were needing a new tent, the Marmot Halo 6 is the tent we think has it all.

You may find Trailspace Gear Reviews another helpul resource.

If this is your first tent, visit a friendly outfitter, such as REI, that will let you set up, tear down, and crawl inside the tent before you buy. You may want to try renting some gear first.

Of course, all of this is, merely, our very humble opinion. YMMV!

Welcome aboard!

Good luck in your search!

Happy camping!
