I always had 1st gear and reverse when the problem started, just couldn't get it to shift into 2nd and up when we pulled out of a rest stop. Prior to that, it didn't want to shift into 2nd after gassing up about 100 miles earlier but did with a little bit of coaxing.

I did put in 5 qts yesterday. Couldn't tell if it was still under/overfilled since there was fluid in the dip tube from putting the new fluid in. But I was able to coax it into 2nd and 3rd by playing alot with the gas pedal and shifter and we got 5 more miles down the interstate to the next exit which is where I had Good Sam tow me to my present location.

If the transmission did burp fluid out, wouldn't there be evidence of that? I can't see any sign of fluid anywhere except some grimy liquid on what I think is the parking brake behind the tranny.

Yes, that is the parking brake and they can drip some fluid. They don't hold much so you need to get that fluid level checked.

Regarding the fluid dump - Take a look at the top of the bell housing/tranny area. You should see the overflow which comes off the top. It will go into a hose which will dump onto the ground. It could be possible to puke out fluid and not have it all smeared on the underneath.

Thanks, Pirate, I saw the tube but didn't know what it might be.

Just wondering, (not to hijack this tread) but how many miles did some of you have when the trans failed?

I have never seen a that much fluid go out of the trans without some type of residue somewhere. That seems very odd to me, even if it came from the top of the trans....

Did you check the front radiator area? Maybe something in the cooling paths failed?

Best of luck, please keep us posted as to the issue and solution...

Typical problem with Ford Transmissions, it's been a problem for years.

Really???

This a first for me... I have owned Ford truck products since I have been old enuff to sign a contract. 35 years and no Tranny problems... Even on the Damon...

Some good, some bad. I guess you have a bad one...

I had a GM and a Chrysler product that kept dropping trannys...

Check the Radiator... I bet there is Tranny fluid in it...

That concerns me... Ford needs to get on the ball.

Yep, fill with new tranny fluid AND ADD SEAL SWELLER WITH FLUID.
Then try to drive to Ford truck garage.

It's funny how people come to believe a certain brand is bad. In my experience, the only automatic transmission problems I've had were in a one-ton Chevy pickup and a Chrysler. The E4OD auto on my 1996 F250 has not failed me, and it's still pulling.

While I have not had an issue with my ford yet, if you look at the number of issues posted on the forum related to ford trans failures along with the fact I have seen the issue in a friends RV fist hand, it does not make ford look good.

It is a ford issue and with all due respect, you really can not compare a 1996 f250 with a motorhome setup.

Clearly all brands have issues of sometype, but, ford does stand out as a leader in trans issues in this forum related to gas motorhomes.
