Typical problem with Ford Transmissions, it's been a problem for years.

That's just baised I have owned many fords including a F-53 chassis never had one problem. I think anything can fail why do you think there are some many Allison service centers, ( before anything gets started I like Allison's transmissons)And Ford, Gm, Frieghtliner, etc.............

For the orginal poster look near the front and see if you lost your fluid by the cooler and maybe it just did not blow all the way back.

Since Ford powered gas coaches probably outnumber the "other" brand by probably 3 to 1, I don't feel that their transmission failures are any greater. My 99 Chinook has 92,000 trouble free miles pulling a toad.

While I have not had an issue with my ford yet, if you look at the number of issues posted on the forum related to ford trans failures along with the fact I have seen the issue in a friends RV fist hand, it does not make ford look good.

I must have missed those number of issues posted on this forum about the Ford transmission failures. All I can recall is a couple or so.

It would be interesting though to review the details involved with those number of issues on the transmission failures to perhaps reveal where the weakness in the transmission exists. I would be interested only in the 4R100 failures.

Thanks

If that tranny has a vacuum modulator cannister on it and was leaking- maybe that's where the fluid went. Right into the engine to be burned up.
A slight leak would never be noticed.

Transmission is electronic therefore no vacuum modulator.

I am on my third E4OD transmission and this one is barfing fluid on occasion. Never ever had auto transmission problems until the Ford E4OD. Matter of fact I just added a fan and this AM I am off to find an additional aux cooler. Been a continous problem for me.

Hi Jerry, sorry to hear about your tranny problems, have you had occasion to check with a transmission tech and ask what causes the E4OD to puke out the fluid?

It's funny how people come to believe a certain brand is bad. In my experience, the only automatic transmission problems I've had were in a one-ton Chevy pickup and a Chrysler. The E4OD auto on my 1996 F250 has not failed me, and it's still pulling.

It is a ford issue and with all due respect, you really can not compare a 1996 f250 with a motorhome setup.

Clearly all brands have issues of sometype, but, ford does stand out as a leader in trans issues in this forum related to gas motorhomes.

As Curtis G pointed out, there's a heck of a lot more Ford units out (especially of the vintage that are old enough to have tranny problems) than any other brand. Combine their numbers and their age along with the fact that a lot of people don't keep their fluid changed and you have tranny problems.

TC output temp was 170 deg or lower.Transmission temp internally was about 140 deg. Early spring time 60 deg ambient temp. Did it while pulling up to a campsite and pulling into a Walmart parking lot. All told, it has done it about 6 times in the past two years. I just purchased an additional stacked plate aux cooler to see if it helps. But, the problem seems not to be excess temp. Checked flow rate, fine.
My transmission guy claims he gets several calls a week from Ford customers with the same complaint. He says to drive it and forget it. Something about the Fords operating at very high pressures. He said he will replace the front seal for $700 but doesn't recommend it.
