Going to MExico for a week. Need cell coverage. Have AT&T, do they have coverage in Mexico City. If so does it cost you a small fortune?
Would I be better off getting a phone for a week when i get there.?

ATT Mexico Coverage
This link has clickable/zoomable maps that show coverage for both of Mexico's phone companies. Mexico City looks covered. Also, it depends on which phone you have.
ATT has a $5/month plan that gets your per-minute price down to $.59 (It's $.99 without) You can buy phone cards in Mexico for the pay phones, but one I bought for $11 US used all it's time up before I could get connected to somebody when I was calling Hughes Net!
US phone cards supposedly can be made to work in Mexico by dialing 99 first or something, but I couldn't make it happen.

We just bought a "moviestar" cell phone($30) to use while in Mexico and 200 pesos gave us more minutes than we could use in 4 months. Next winter, all we have to do is renew the sim card and add minutes.

The plan we were under was around 40 cents for 2 minutes or $1 for 30 minutes to the states. The phone came with 100 pesos of time and we added 200p more, which we did not use all of during the winter. The service was very good in kino Bay. Have a local go with you when you buy one, if you don't speak good Spanish, so you get the best current rate. We bought ours at Wally World in Monterrey, but they can be bought on almost every street corner in Mexico.

I think what Im going to do is rent a cell phone. I found a phone company that will rent me a phone for a week for $100. All the US calls I want to make.

I have Verizon Wireless and although I haven't tried it yet, they tell me that it will work in Mexico -- with roaming charges of $0.99 per minute.
By the way, about "Moviestar"... It's Movistar, without the "e". The "movi" part is pronounced similar to "Moby" in Moby Dick. Not like "moo" of movie. It's from the Spanish company Telefonica. The "movi" comes from "movil" which is what they call cell phones in Spain ("mobile phone"). In Mexico, they use "celular".

TelCel has track phones for about the same price, and you can call the US and Canada for about $1.15 US for up to 20 minutes. You pay the same if you call and get an answering machine. Again, each year you replace the SIM card -- also has to be changed by region.
The trick with these phones is to make certain you get the right plan. You want the Pay Per Call plan, and you need to be specific about your intention. It will take at least 24 hours to get it activated. We found some TelCel employees were not aware of the plan in smaller regions, so we had to go to heroic lengths to get it set up. In larger cities, it was easy.

SKYPE doesn't work very well for those of us with internet satellite.
