I have been lurking on this site for a long time and finally got registered and am ready to be part of the family. I just sold my 1987 Starcraft truck camper and am looking at buying a different one. My question is this, I think that I am going to buy a 2002 Palomino to put in my 05 crewcab shortbox Duramax. I don't have any sort of tie down system on my truck and I need to get the camper on Saturday. The camper is about 400 miles from home and not sure how to keep it in place for the trip home. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Take care and have a safe and happy 4th.

I would break down and order some camper tiedowns, its the only safer way to get it home. Your truck is common so most RV shops should have them or be able to get them overnight

Torklift tiedowns with Torklift Fastguns are really nice. If you go with Fastguns buy the locks. Be sure the locks are fully engaged.

I agree, Torklifts and FastGuns are the way to go. As for the locks, when I bought my Fastguns, they had no locks, so I went to Walmart and bought a set of four keyed alike brass locks for $12.00. Have worked just fine for three years.

You'll love the Torklifts and Fastguns. The brackets are a bolt on install. Maybe where you are getting the TC, will have them or can get them in time. Don't drive 400 miles without any tie downs though.

The problem I have is that I can't find anything here in town and I have to have the camper picked up on Saturday. Is there anything I can use to get by just to get the camper home? After I get it here, I will order a set of Torklifts and be set up properly, but I need some temporary way to get it home. Thanks

The consensus is and I agree, proper tie downs are needed for a 400 mile trip with that load. If it were me, I'd look for an overnight delivery of the tie downs, as already suggested, and/or reschedule taking delivery of the camper. It would be far better to pay the seller a storage fee than to be unsafe. If the seller wouldn't work with me on rescheduling, it would be a deal breaker.

Thanks for all the advice, I think I figured out what I am going to do. I can't get any tiedowns until Monday and I have a flatbed trailer that is only 5'4" wide and I am going to put it on that. Any thoughts on using a trailer to haul it home?

If your flatbed is a skinny single axle, I would rather put it on the truck. Campers can get top heavy on those little trailers.

Just to secure it for the trip home, go to home depot and pick up 4 eye bolts about 3/8" thread and 8 each nuts and body washers and install them on the front tops of the bedrails and on the ends of the bumper and while you're at home depot, pick 4 turn buckles, a few s-hooks and about a 6 foot length of 1/4" chain.

Bring your bolt cutters with you so you can cut the chain to length once you get the camper loaded on the truck and figure out how much chain you need to hook up the turn buckles between the camper eye anchors and the eye bolts on the truck bed and bumper. This will get you home safely and cheaply untill you can get some real tie downs installed on the truck.
