OK OK< I will admit to this. Last weekend I spent at WalMart parking. I put out an empty 5 gallong bucket, asking for fuel money. I got $167.00. Then I filled the truck up and it cost me 108.00 .

Now I got a sign that says "will tell you lies all day for 5 bucks" So far, I am 23.00 (gave a discount) .

Looking for suggestions for the next sign: No I will not work PERIOD!!!

I've been thinking, and it occurred to me that I might not be a "diehard RVer". In fact, I'm starting to feel like an oddball 'cause, unlike most RVers, we enjoy our new house, and our neighborhood, and our city, and our region.
Yes, we've been forced into modifying our RVing schedule (who hasn't), but it's no big deal. RVing is not our passion, therefore we are not cutting back too much on all the other activities that we enjoy. We follow a diesel budget, which means we just don't go as far, nor as often.

We are considering trading our fifth wheel in for a somewhat smaller travel trailer in hopes that we will get better fuel mileage. But right now it's still a consideration...we will have to see what happens....

We changed our lifestyle but not initially because of fuel prices; it was simply coincidental. I retired 2 weeks ago and we had decided last fall that we would put our 5th wheel on a seasonal site in the Adirondacks just to 'unwind' for a summer.

Our plan was to minimize mileage on the truck then put the rig up for sale and move to a motorhome (Class A) in 2009. We're now thinking that we will keep the 5th wheel and again leave it on a seasonal site for 2009 and get a 28'-30' Class C to do 'some' traveling. The seasonal site is really cheap and I would have to pay for storage at home anyway if we didn't have it.

Time will tell.

It looks like we'll be skipping our "big" trip this year, but the price of fuel is just a small part of the reason. On a 3000 mile roundtrip, I figure an extra dollar per gallon would cost $250. That in itself wouldn't stop us, but combined with the other costs and lost income for two weeks, we've decided we'd better stay home and work.

We are remaining optimistic so are continuing with some small renovations on the rig & have just renewed our insurance for another year. We will get the motorhome serviced in the fall & hopefully hit the road for the southwest sometime in late October. At the moment we are seriously considering lightning our load by selling our house & renting a small place in the country in preparation to possibly full timing by the end of next year. Hard to make sound decisions in a shaky economy but the thoughts of sitting in the house looking out the windows on a desolate winter landscape for years to come, waiting for the grim reaper to show up at the door....IS NOT AN OPTION!!!!

Don't fear the reaper, but I agree not to wait for him.
Right now we only do 3 to 5 weeks, maybe a few more days. We will make adjustments as needed. I hate to say it , but the first thing I cut out is my monetary donations. I know it is wrong, but I believe in charity starts at home, well "home" used to be the US, now it is us. So if my kids have a camp coming up, then they get the money, and the beggars have to wait. The DW has increased her coupons, and buying a few generic items. But over all we are not hurting. Just less going into the bank. And my DR bills adding up isn't helping matters any. Past 2 months have cost me about 2 grand each, well maybe in the last 3 months it was 4 grand. With more yet to come. But I will keep on RV'n or die trying.
