How about a folding baby gate across the door opening? You son couldn't get out without making enough racket to wake you up, but not the rest of the campground. You could also just mount a screw eye near the door and attach a bungee cord between the door handle and the screw eye at night.

If my DD every did wander out I think the last thing they would have to worry about for noise is the alarm as I would be outside yelling for her. We never had to deal with that but like stated in younger years they can wake up confused espically the 1st night or two. It was just for mommy's piece of mind.

If you have a child who might take a stroll in the middle of the night, you might pick up a Passport Potty from Wal-mart (under $50)....as to locking your PUP door, the my b/f was able to stick a tooth pick in the thing so our 2 yr old grandchild couldn't unlock it/open it (can't see at night to see the toothpick).

I wonder about taping cardboard or a sponge or some such item over the speaker of the alarm. Possibly that could muffle it so that it would waken you but not your neighbors. Another idea would be the possibility of a motion sensor device set across the door way that would activate not a light but instead a radio and you could adjust the volume?

IMHO you are in a tent locking the door will not stop anyone from coming in if the want to. How hard is it to just cut the tenting and crawl in? I did not even lock mine when we were not there. Why have someone damage the pup getting in it?

We went with one of the barrel bolts at the top of the door where the rug rat couldn't reach after the first time he made a breakout and we found him eating breakfast with the neighbors.
As to other times we lock the door when we leave. While it doesn't really give any security once we came back to the campground and everyone was going crazy over a missing child. Come to find out he'd come over to our trailer to play with my son and when we weren't there took a nap. That made us lock up from then on...LOL

The DW and I had your same concerns. We ended up using barrel bolts at the top of the door where our son couldn't reach it. We also put one on the outside when he was sleeping so he couldn't get out while we were by the fire our out of sight of the camper.
Life is a rollercoaster and I'm not strapped in.

I can't imagine our grandson going outside without us, he always comes to wake us up, or always has. Last weekend was the first time we locked our pup. Grandson had been playing with a little neighbor boy and he was really interested in what was in our camper. We were all going into town, so decided to lock it mainly to keep him out, he wasn't a bad kid, just curious, and only 6 so probably not too sure about social right and wrong, so we just locked up and everything was fine.
I agree, I wouldn't stay in a campground that I felt I had to lock up to keep bad people out.

I really like the barrel bolt idea, my grandson and I go camping alot and it has crossed my mind.
I couldn't imagine waking up to find my grandson had walked away.. what a gut wrencher, I think I might install one just to be sure.
