Hi folks,
I am a member of a private forum of the Offroad Caravan called a Bushtracker which is a van that can go anywhere and be used to live in away from civilization if need be...
I originally had one ordered, but due to a significant health scare we had to cancel the order...luckily we had our deposit returned..
At that time I was permitted to become a member of their forum which contains much practical data...
Anyway...over here there has been a trend towards using natural treatments for Porta potties etc...and one great product has been Bio-magic.. http://www.biomagic.com.au/ we actually purchased some with the hope it could remove the doggie odour that we get in our house with our 2 large dogs...and it works just brilliantly...it just removes smell like Magic...as the name says...
Many folks have been using it in their portables with great success, however some have had trouble, BUT there is a new product that has surfaced called Portable Toilet Treatment PTT from a company called Enviropro.. http://www.enviropro.com.au/home.html and a member has said that it works much better than Biomagic...and to do that it must be good...

I have a friend who used Biomagic in a infrequently used commercial grease trap (1000 liters) and he said it just magically changed his foul smelling grease trap that was anaerobically belching foul gasses into absence of all odors in 15 minutes...he was stunned...he bought the product on my recommendation...I was glad he got such a great result...
I have asked the forum members concerned if they can report back with further info...as some folk have only just purchased the PTT in the last day or so...
Not quite sure how this helps you guys...but there may be an outlet over there or a similar product...
Below this post I will try to place some text from my Bushtracker forum so you can get a feel for it..Maybe someone could take on an agency...lol
Of course I would imagine that there is a similar product over there, but I just thought i would mention it.
There is a Biomagic USA site here... http://www.biomagic.com/
hi...here is the thread...its a little disjointed in the way it copied across, however you will get the drift of it...some of these folks live in their vans and work around Oz and some just travel this vast land and have liked it so much that they do it full time for years on end...They are not restricted tp van parks at all and lots free camp...these vans are not cheap and cost between $90,000 to $130,000...which is a small fortune for some...they weigh heavy because of all of the survival gear on them...in the region of 3,500 kg or 7,700 pounds...
Most use either a converted to RH Drive F250 or Sliverado or GMC Or the Toyota Landcruiser is popular for the not so large vans, and the Toys new diesel V8 is proving popular...but its not as suitable for the job as a ...what we affectionately call them here...a Yank Tank...
Here is a little of the thread

The post
Two quick questions for those using Biomagic in Thetfords.
Even if the loo isn't "full", how often do you empty it anyway, i.e. how many days before it "needs" to be emptied even if it's still only half-full?
Do you flush it out after every emptying. If so, I assume it's just with a few litres of ordinary water?
Any other hints? I've picked up from ealier topics to use a little yoghurt if it starts to smell, and also some olive oil on the "blade".
Thanks
If you come to a fork in the road, take it

Hi Rick & Julie
We were lucky enough to find out about a product PTT (Portable Toilet Treatment) from a BT Member Rob n Son. It eliminates all odours, reduces solids in the Thetford Cassette and leaves the ensuite smelling like a rose. Check out Web site www.enviropro.com.au We ordered 5 litres because we are doing Ozz. We mix 15ml PTT with the water in the "flushing" tank, and put 15ml in the cassette itself. Also very little (if any) scale build-up inside cassette.
We empty our cassette when 3/4 full, then give it a bit of a rinse out.
Hope this helps.

Hi Rick & Julie
Perhaps we should have mentioned we started using Biomagic from pick-up day,
when our BT was brand spanking new. We felt the result should have been better
and persevered with it for 3 months. Since using the PTT......what a difference!!
At the end of the day after all, it is personal preference.
Cheers & Happy Travels to all

Hello sue and Jeff,
Did you find it difficult to obtain the PTT...we are in Nambour in Qld...
It certainly sounds impressive..Ii have been using Biomagic for other reasons to deodorize just about anything...do you know if you can use PTT as a general purpose deodourant of certain plkaces such as a dog kennel...or removing a doggy odour from my car...Biomagic works very well for that purpose...but I was wondering if PTT could substitute...save buying both if PTT is a general purpose deodorant like Biomagic.
thanks,

Fosssssss............I just received my 5 lt bottle of it today in the mail, very fast service. Cost $27.00 to post, but we're not complaining. Smells pretty nice too. They send a detailed brochure with lots of other products listed there too...all along the same lines as the toilet stuff but for diferent uses.
Cheers, Jan O
PS We are in Newman WA and the mail is normally VERY slow to here, but this stuff arrived in record time!

Been following this thread and recieved our 1Lt by post last Tuesday (in Adelaide)after ordering the previous Friday am by telephone. Keen to try it as we have been BioMagic users by choice for two years. Just one litre to test on an impending 1 weeker near Pt Lincoln. Yes - nice 'fragrance' without even opening the bottle! Hm! That has caused me some concern though! Chap seemed most helpful and chuffed to hear 'his' product is gaining a 'good name' via forums.

Hi Folks,
I realise its only a day or so since you got the PTT...but I was wondering if you folks have anything to report yet...such as is the smell or perfume too pervasive, or is it something that you might be able to use in conjunction with biomagic...
HEY!!...there is a test, perhaps???...perhaps use 50/50 PTT and Biomagic and get the best of both worlds...???
Anyway...I would be grateful if some one ie Rockgok or Sue and Jeff or Ian or sally...or anyone who can do a comparison or even a mix test could give an answer...
I will be getting some anyway, but as usual I crave information and reports...I guess I am just a gadget man etc...
Thank for this thread,
Regards and happy pristine toilets...lol...

ah!!
I see that they say on their website not to use it with other products...however I do believe they are referring to solutions that contain bio-cides such as formalin or other chemical maskers or bacteria killers.

Fosss, I could not tell from the thread if Thetford's Deodorizer is available in Australia and what advantages these products have over it. For us the Thetford products are available at any of our Big Box stores and works like a charm.

Yes we have Thetford chemicals here, but they are not as environmentaly friendly or apparently work as well as either Biomagic and PTT
The big problem with some of them is that they will kill a septic system...and some country areas only have what we call septic system, and when folks use the standard toilet (yes they do do that) to dispose of the waste using the chemical based ones it ends up stopping the natural septic waste breakdown process and then the system gets clogged..
When the bio friendly additives like Biomagic or PTT are used, and the waste disposed, the contents actually help the septic system instead of killing it...
But on looking at the USA Thetford site, there is a good choice of Bio-friendly ones...and there are now some on the Oz site...so all of my 2 finger typing was probably a bit over enthusiastic ....lol

Fosss, we have the same situation here with camp grounds having septic systems. I believe some are requiring that campers only use formaldehyde free deodorizers.
Liquid Gold deodorizers (sold in most Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, etc) are formaldehyde free and these are MUCH cheaper than the Aqua-Kem (Thetford's brand in North America) that does contain formaldehyde. The company who makes the Liquid Gold brand is Sanitation Equipment, LTD in Ontario, Canada. They are also the makers of the Visa Porti-Potties.
Take it from a person who has been running rivers in the NW for years in designated wilderness areas. We have to pack out usally a weeks worth of SH*T from 10-15 people. Imagine having to carry that on a raft for 7 days. I have to occasionally if I have Groover duty.
The best stuff for odor control is powdered Clorox II. Not sure if it's bio or not, but I don't care. It takes the smell out.
Oh, I also work for an engineering firm who does wastewater management. I know hwat goes into treating our poo. The Clorox is the one of the least of our worries.
Rob
EDIT: I should qualify my remarks in saying that Clorox II is not a "set it and forget it" substance that is used in flushable toilets. My comment was strictly for odor control and in that instance typically a black/grey water system is getting too full so the option would be to sprinkle a bit down the "hole". That's all.

Campingrandma, Please note that Thetford does have a formaldehyde free deodorizer that is available in the big box stores. It is the one I showed in the link in my message above.
On our recent trip to Mt Rushmore/Yellowstone this year I used Odorlos instead of the usual Thetford AquaChem based on some recommendations of others of a couple of forums. My one trip observation is that it does seem to work without odor but AFTER a couple of days. It seems to take a day or two to get going. The Thetford stuff works well from the beginning but with a definate chemical smell.
I also just bought a bottle of Camco TST Orange which I have not tried yet.
I am in search of a product that will work well in my cassette potty but without the chemical small of the Thetford AquaChem. Anybody have any other recommendations?

AZJIMI,
Its a shame that the Enviropro PTT as linked above is not available in USA...it sounds from reports that it would do just what you want it to, with no chemical smell...
