I thought about it being the hub nut, but I checked that carefully before putting the cotter pin back in. It was at the point that it was snug, but not too tight. I couldn't have gotten another turn out of it. So, I backed it off until the holes lined up for the cotter pin.
I think the brakes are just too tight. I hope so anyway.

hubs on a trailer, especially a box trailer such as a RV, can get very hot running in strong sidewinds while the opposite side hubs have a normal temp.
