Just like so many Americans, you and I have been played.
They dangled the carrot in front of us and we chased it.
I would say that you need to move to an area with reasonable utilities. $485 is a little much.
"Is America Doomed?", not necessarily and neither are you. Just tighten your buns and hold on.
This whole situation we are suffering through is being controlled and is likened to a football game, accept we have not been given the play book.
Enron was able to contrive a plan to make money by fraud, but they are not the only players in this game. There are others, not necessarily corporations, that are trying the same thing, but in another way.
The average American is not trained in the ways of high finance and the intricacies of political falderall, so we are at their mercy.
A few saw how easy it was to fleece us and then they all hopped into the fray, and now it is merely a feeding frenzy.
Only our leaders have the power to intervene and do what is needed to quell this shark attack.
There are a number of people here that have investment and stock market savvy, but they too are at the mercy of the "DO'ERS". The DO'ERS have the play book.
Americans have been the "Goody Two Shoes", but they let in the "Filthy Beast", and now they we need to find a way of getting the beast out.
It would help if the Media was on our side, but alas, they work for the beast.
All each of us can do is to hope someone is lurking in the wings with the power to straighten this out. I know, I'm a dreamer, but America is too nice a place to just give up on.
I hate unreasonable controls, but it may come to pass that they will have to come.
Maybe a better word would be "Constraints".
This "American Dream" has become a nightmare to many people.
To a great extent, it is out of the hands of the average person, but our only hope is in our votes, as to whom we choose for help.
Don't be swayed and listen closely to every word and analyze those words for their content.
We find it hard to tighten the belt, because we have no more holes in it, so we have to punch some new ones.
Hold on, all is not lost yet. BUT, I used to be a bus drive, so what do I know.

Well we just can't go out and shoot the idots in charge. And voting never seems to work. So the best way to get back at them is hit them in their own pockets. The less new we buy, the less of everything we buy will help us, and hurt them.
And it may have sucked growing up having to do these things,( I grew up in the 60s and 70s, and we was poor, not dirt poor, but still I remember times of having no furniture.) Anyway you do what you have to, to survive. I mean a single father raising a kid, if his money is gone then what, just tell him to eat steak every night, and spend his money wiley niley all over the place. I bet after a few adjustments and some getting used to, he may be able to get by. It sucks having to make adjustments in your life.
Most people buy the insurance that is offered them.. Most insurance agents are more worried about their commission than their clients. (I mean this is logical, you do need to take care of yourself after all)
Thus changing insurance can often save a couple 50, 100 or more a month (Depending on how much insurance you have and how much you convert to) at the same time actually INCREASING their insurance coverage
I am licensed for some types of insurance.... In the state of Michigan (only)
One of these days I'll look up a few magazine articles on this since there is one insurance company that seems to be more concerned with the client.

I already work two jobs, So now what's a guy supposed to do?
Since you are on an RV forum, I will assume you have an RV, SELL IT! They are toys and they are a money pit. It is fine if you can afford it, apparently you cannot.
If you have a boat, SELL IT! Same reasons as above.
Have a yard sale, get rid of everything you no longer need. Note that I said need, not want.
For dinner tonight you will have rice and beans prepared at home. For dinner tomorrow you will beans and rice prepared at home. Then repeat daily until this situation is resolved. You got into this situation through either an unfortunate circumstance or your own bad decisions. It is now up to you to get yourself out of it.
Take the money from the sales and pay down your debt starting with the smallest bill and then move towards the largest bill.
Go to www.daveramsey.com, listen to his radio show, read the great success stories. He specializes in people in your situation.
Good luck, it will be hard but it is doable. I know from experience.

This sounds so insignificant I hesitate to even mention it but one thing you can do is become a very savvy coupon user. DW opened my eyes to this idea. Like many guys, I scoffed at this clipping of ads and coupons and making files for coupons and special offers and bulk buying on sales and such. But, boy, have I changed my tune since I found out what the effect on the home budget can be! Just to see what the facts were, I started "auditing" our budget with an eye to coupon use and found that my DW actually reduced the grocey bill be darn near 20% by becoming an aggressive coupon hawk. I am now a believer. Small thing but, hey, everything helps out.

....I worked for a very wealthy man several years ago, doing a large project on his yacht. He liked and trusted me, hired me to oversee his entire project. One day he asked me if I knew why I was hired, I replied mainly to watch your dollars. He said no, I hired you to watch my pennies, if you do that well, my dollars will take care of themselves.....he was quite right.
