I found sun tea to be on the bitter side.

MY DH is from the south and loves sweet tea. Best way to make sweet tea is to bring the water to a boil and add the sugar so that it will dilute. Then add the tea bags.

MY MIL use to make sweet tea sooooooooo sweet, you could use it for syrup the next morning! She also made the tea extremely strong. It wasn't bitter, just strong. My DH loved it!

I have modified this sweet tea for my DH. I take a large sauce pan and put about 3 cups of water in it. To that I add three packages of Sweet & Low. Once the water has come to a boil I add 8 decafinated tea bags and boil for about 2 minutes. I squeeze out all the liquid from the tea bags.

In a half gallon plastic pitcher (I use my Tupperware pitcher) I add about two cups of ice and enough water to cover the ice and then I add the hot tea to the cold water adding more cold water to make a full 1/2 gallon container.

The DH loves it, too sweet for my taste though.

Now hold on...First you use the pink stuff instead of sugar...then, you add it before the teabags, then you actually BOIL the teabags??!!

Don't tell me...you probably use lipton not Luzianne, right?

Man-oh-man...Southern people all over this Country are getting bellyaches right now and don't even know why.

Boy oh boy, I guess we all are going to die if we drink sun tea. How about doing your dishes? You better BOIL your dish water for 5 minutes before you do the dishes because it is not hot enough and bacteria can form. I guess you better not drink the tap water unless you have boiled it for 5 mintues first, Bacteria you know. I make sun tea in a glass jar with tap water, takes about 3 hours, and then into the refer to cool. Been doing it like this for years with no problems. But if it bothers you, don't do it. I will continue.

I find the sun tea a bit on the bitter side. I like it made it the fridge overnight, no sugar. But we drink so much of it that we use a Mr. Tea.

DW used to do sun tea, but now uses the drip coffee maker. She puts the tea in the brew basket and sweetener (right now it's pink stuff) in the pot. The tea needs to cool just a little before she puts it in a plastic pitcher that fits in our little fridge.

I've made what we call lemon sun tea for many years -using a 1/2 gallon container, put six tea bags in along with water and let sit in sun for 4-5 hours. After removing tea bags add 1/2 of a small tub of Crystal Lite Lemonade mix (no sugar)- shake to dissolve and it's all done. We lived and cruised on a sailboat for a number of years and this was so easy to make - now that we have an RV we're still using this type of tea.

Was just merely pointing out facts in my post, take it with a grain of salt.

Is sun tea good..yes, am I afraid to drink it...no, but I rather have the boiled method anyways, more flavor IMO.

Cruzette...hope you know I was just messing with ya.
I've been known to use that Lipton "cold-brew" stuff when in a pinch, you don't even heat the water! (Don't tell my Southern family!)

To the OP...I've been making and drinking sun tea my whole life, no problems.

We use an ice tea maker at home, being from the south sun tea just ain't my bag. I remember asking for sweet tea while visiting our d/d in California she had to remind me that I was not in the south I opted for a coke.(nothing beats good ole southern sweet iced tea)
