I realize life is about chance. Sometimes bad things happen no matter what you do. Still, every time I leave my rig to go do something, I have the feeling of what about the dogs if the A/C fails or if the rig catches fire. I realize the same can be said for my house, but I don't drive my house down the road bouncing it all over the place with LP tanks etc. Does anyone else consider this aspect of camping? I have wondered about asking my neighbors in the campground to keep and eye and telling them where there is a hidden key. What do you think?

What I do is if I have someone that is trutworthy that is staying at the campground, I leave the door unlocked. I also have a sign on the outside of the unit by the door stating-in emergency please save my dog. Good Luck and hope you can feel at ease with the decision.

We have Yorkies and have left them in the trailer when we've left on occasion. I really haven't thought about the dangers you mention.

I think it'd be good to ask a camping neighbor to keep an eye out, but would be careful about letting them know about a hidden key. RVers usually are a great group of people, but.......

Some campground rules state that you cannot leave pets unattended, outside the camper, or inside the camper. Everywhere we've stayed in WV,TN,NC,SC & WV has those rules. I've seen people leave their pets in their camper and we've put up with listening to "some" of them bark until their owners returned...this, without a doubt, get's on your last nerve, especially seeing as how we don't let our dogs disturb our neighbors when camping. Some are well behaved and don't bark, but I truly wonder if some who leave their dogs in their campers don't actually know that their dogs are barking while they're gone and really disturbing their neighbors. I personally would worry about my two dogs per chance some of the examples listed above WERE to happen while we were gone. We have our pets and we're responsible for them, I don't know if leaving them behind in a camper and being gone for a while, (some we've seen have left their pets for as long as 6-7 hrs at a time)...is being responsible. If we don't want to take care of them, then leave them at home, kennel them, or don't own them. This is coming from an avid pet lover and owner who has taken his dogs with him camping for as long as we've been camping and owned pets, (approx 38 yrs. now). Asking another camper to keep an eye on MY dogs...I don't think my neighbor signed up to take on that responsibility with MY pet's on any camping trip, nor would I expect them to...remember, most of us go camping to "get away from it all". Odd's are your neighbor did the same thing..that includes barking dogs or worrying about someone else's pet. All this just my opinion and my .02 cents worth on this subject.

Doors unlocked, cell phone number taped on entry door, rescue sticker I picked up a fire departments that lists the pets inside on window and battery operated fans on the dogs.
Camping World has a portable battery/dc operated small air cond that works of a bag of ice, I'm looking into that watching the pet stop forum on feed back how they work.

Say a prayer and leave just like at home.

NCHauler. We prefer to take our pets with us too, but there are too many places where it is not allowed or feasible. Many Florida beaches do not allow dogs and Florida State Parks do not allow them on beaches for sure. As for barking, we always ask our nearby neighbors to please let us know if our dogs have disturbed them while we are away. In many years we have never had anyone complain to us or to management. In those same years, I have never been disturbed by a yapper/barker so I guess I have been fortunate. My only gripe is people who leave their dogs OUTSIDE or turn them off their leashes on a beach. I do not stay in campgrounds who have a strict policy of not leaving the pups alone. It is just too hard to do sometimes.

We have been taking our dogs for the last 8 years. They lay down and snooze until we get back. I always ask my neighbors if they act up and get the same answer no. Nice and quiet. Leaving them in our rv is no different then the house to us. A/C on and windows shut.

paulonius,I agree with you to some extent. We do not leave our dogs unattended when they're outside. There have been a few times, very few, over the years that we didn't take our dogs with us due to us visiting with friends or relatives where we couldn't have the dogs, but those are rare. I understand where your coming from, but I'll say again, I've seen people leave their dogs in a camper and the dog(s) have barked the entire time they were gone...oh, I never complained to management or that neighbor..don't know why, just didn't. I still would not ask someone that I don't know,or have just met at a campground, and may never see again, to "keep an eye" on my dog(s) while I was gone. I just don't think it's right. To my wife and I, leaving them at home that is inside a fenced in yard, with neighbors that we've knowned for 15 years "keeping an eye out", is a bit different then leaving them in an RV, with someone "supposedly" watching them that really may not care at all what happens to "your" pets. There are people out there like that. Again, just my opinion, everyone is entitled to one whether it's right, wrong, indifferent or accepted by others.

So, you're going to leave your dogs in the RV while you're away so they can be a nuisance to others by barking.

Yes, I know you're dogs don't bark... heard this many times previously.

If you're going to take the dogs with you when you're RV-ing, do them (& your neighbors) a favor by taking them with you when you leave the RV.
