Last night I recieved an email from a friend from out of town.....it read:
"PLEASE CALL 911 I NEED HELP. MY PHONE IS OUT! SEND HELP TO XXX HIGHWAY 20, FORT BRAGG, CA"
She sent the message to EVERYONE in her address book..........
The message (according to the time stamp) was sent at 8:44 p.m......I didn't get it until 10:30 p.m., after I returned from the fireworks at the casino.....So, I called Fort Bragg Police Department instead of 911.......
The police Department said they recieved "numerous" calls regarding the email that was sent........
Still waiting to hear what happened to her.........

Thats strange. I read an article a few months ago about a woman who got a call about her daughter being hurt really bad in an accident in Mexico. To get her life flighted back to the USA she needed to wire several grand to a certain address. Since her daughter was in Mexico on vacation and it was 2:00am, she wired the money. It was all a fraud. The caller calls hundreds of people until they find someone who has an actual kid on vacation in Mexico and it sounds believable. Not sure what I"d do but be careful because there is a new scam every minute.

As a police dispatcher I've had folks call to verify that kind of thing.
In this case the person who got the message, if they know how to use their phone has some ability to do at least a first level verification of the caller's ID (The message carries the originating number) This is no guarantee the phone has not been "Cloned" or the number phreaked but it does help.
In the classic scam.. Well, I got this from a hotel.
The desk clerk called and said they had gotten a phone call saying that the hotel manager was involved in something and needed money.. Please wire money.
NOT to the manager but to a code name.. So an agent can pick it up and get it to him...
I mean, I hear a story like that and the alarm bells don't go ding-ding-ding They go BONG BONG BONG BONG (much louder,, Much much louder)
Oh, the manager showed up 30 minutes later. no problem Just heavy traffic on his way to work
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business
