Thanks!

HI There are 5 campgrounds at Rend Lake Wayne Fitzgearld State Park Exit 77 off of I-57 It's $20.00 a night but we just left there and it was clean and quiet It's about 2 mile from the interstate.Sites were spacious and we saw everything from tents,TT,5ver's and big rigs. Bathhouse were clean. They only have eletric hookups. Dump station is available. Here a Phone # 1-618-629-2320 Wayne Fitzgearld is all 1st come 1st serve But didn't have a problem coming in on a thursday and never did fill up over the weekend.

Gun Creek Is a corp park and is also off of I-57 at exit 77 It was nice Although We haven't stayed here yet. I believe it is $16.00 a night. Showerhouse were clean. Sites seemed to be closer to each other some road were a little tight but we saw alot of TT, & 5 er's.

South Marcum is also nice and is located on the south side of Rend Lake. We have stayed several years now and really enoy this campground. It located at the Benton Exit #71 I think. There is a Wal-MArt at this exit and several Gas stations. You will actually go about 5 miles west to Rend City Road and turn North to find South MArcum and the rest of the campgrounds ( South Marcum is across the Dam road) South Sandusky is about 3 miles from the dam road and North Sandusky is about 3-4 miles from South Sandusky. Also on Rend City Road. All are nice campgrounds and pretty spacious sites. HEre's a link to get more info on the corps campgrounds (marcum, gun creek, S & N Sandusky) /www.recreation.gov or http://www.mvs.usace.army.mil/rend/Recrea/Campground_Info_05.htm (rates and more)

Covey Point in South Marcum is our favorite and has water veiws sites. look for 80-83

I Hope this helps some Good Luck & Happy Trails

Thanks!

I think we'd like to be far away from Benton, if possible. Nothing against Benton or being close to I-57, but a nearby railroad yard had some rather loud banging going on each night - then there was the occasional plane......
That was at the KOA - a nice place, but I didn't care for its location.

I'm hoping Rend Lake is far enough away from the railroad yard and airport - otherwise, we'd stay at that KOA again. Nice folks, and good wi-fi.

Never stayed in Benton at the KOA but have heard the complaints on the noise and such but you'll get that being it's in town. Our favorite is South Marcum and either Covey Poiint or Buck Ridge areas they have sites on the water I would suggest to RSVP a site. If your looking for WI-FI I don't think it's offered but you'll have fun there are to sandy beaches you can go swimming at theres ia a small fee but I believe it's waved for all campers. Also there's a Marina near by that rents boats (pontoon & fishing boats) Never have had the chance too. But heard it high to rent and doesn't include gas.If you need more info that I maybe able to help feel free to PM me.
Don't have too much fun as I'll have to wait until september for my next chance at going back.

You won't hear the railroad oe the airport at any of the places campinginthe woods talked about. Any one of the places will suit you I think. I like th COE places because I have the old mans card and can stay cheaper.

Thanks to all for the replies!

We really don't need much - just the 3 basic hookups and some quiet. We don't have to have wi-fi - I'll connect when I get to relative's places Cincinnati / Dayton the next day.

Memo to traindriver: I have an "old mans card" too. If you like COE parks, you need to check out the one in Lakeview, AR (on Bull Shoals Lake) - about 10 minutes away from us and it's quite nice. We go there occasionally - we'll probably go more often in the future.....

I'm not sure how close to Rend Lake this is, but Fern Clyffe State Park is a beautiful place to camp. I don't think they take reservations, so it's first come-first served. But it is a nice little campground.

Gorgeous trails with the trailheads right in the CG. I think there's something like 18 different trails you can hike on. One of them leads to a huge cave, another leads to a beautiful waterfall and spring. I haven't hiked them all, but the one's I've done are very easy hikes.

My kids love it there, and so do the DW and I. I don't have any photos ready to post or I would show you how pretty it is. Their official web site's photos aren't very good.

Thanks for the info about Fern Clyffe State Park - it looks like a great place, but I think we'd like to get a little further north on our first day. Maybe we might check it out on the way back home?

I stayed at Gun Creek for a few days last Fall. Electricity only on sites--you have to fill up your water at one of several spigots throughout the campground.
I was disappointed because most of the sites are taken up with seasonal campers.
That said, the reserve only sites look a bunch nicer and much less crowded--you might want to take a look at the reserve areas.
Gun Creek is close to the golf course, which is a fine course, close to a marina with a restaurant and the golf course has a restaurant.
All the campsites at Gun Creek are close to the water.

Well, that certainly makes Gun Creek look less attractive. We're just overnighting, but we'd still like at least water to go along with the electricity. Thanks for letting us know about it.....
