GSRA to the rescue
I was hoping that I would never have to use our GSRA but alas that time has come. While returning to my home in California from the Jayco plant in Middlebury IN I had a bearing failure on the door side rear axle of our 5er.
It was about 11PM in the middle of no where Nebraska. Actually it was at about the 368 mile post on I-80. I had just stopped and kicked the tires and didn't notice anything amiss but no more than 1/2 mile down the road I noticed my plastic fender skirt flapping in the breeze. I initially thought a tire had blown but soon found that a wheel was missing and the skirting and fender was damaged. A guy pulling a travel trailer stopped a few minutes later to ask if I lost a wheel, I said I had indeed and he said he found it in the middle of the on ramp where I had just stopped. Talk about luck, I got my wheel back and there was no damage to it. I thanked him and he was on his way. I really wish I had the presence of mind to offer him some kind of reward but, being all wound up over the incident I didn't think of it at the time. If you are out there and you are reading this please PM me with the date and location and I will make sure to thank you in a more "substantial" way.
GSRA had a tow out there in a little over an hour and the axle was chained up and the trailer towed to a shop in York NE. The people at GS did a great job of locating a tow service and getting them out there.
As a side note, the tow company was Moguls Towing and they also have a Transmission shop that does way more than transmission work. Jeff, the owner, was the guy on the tow truck and came in the next morning (even though they are closed on Saturdays) and had me back on the road in no time. As luck would have it he stocks Dexter axle and break parts.
Many thanks to GSRA and Jeff Mogul.
